Q&A: Natural Treatment for Emphysema

Q: I live in **** so I can’t see you in person. I have several things going on, including some mild anxiety, but I’m writing about my lungs. I was recently diagnosed with **** from dust, not smoking. I have a **** machine and a ****light but I haven’t figured out how to use them yet. Can you help and can you tell me any other natural treatments?

A:  Your situation is a perfect example of a very, very common misunderstanding about natural, holistic & alternative health. It is also a very dangerous misunderstanding that leaves good,  well-meaning people open to the worst kinds of quackery and fraud. Please let me explain.

Modern, mainstream, scientific medicine is “Allopathy”…meaning it takes specific symptoms and diagnosis and then counteracts them with specific treatments. Just because something is “natural” (like an herb) or non-pharmaceutical (like these gadgets) does NOT mean that it is holistic!

Stinging nettle is an example. If you use it to dry up the runny nose of a pollen allergy (counteract a specific symptom / diagnosis) then even though it is a natural unprocessed herb, it is still being used purely as an allopathic medicine.

On the other hand, holistic and true alternative medicine works from the standpoint of connected systems and overall functioning. A holistic herbalist may suggest stinging nettle too, but they recommend it because of how it makes the whole immune system work more normally or because it can get to some root cause that will help a whole variety of problems at the same time.

So the key in your question is the phrase “several things going on”…not lungs specifically, and certainly not quack machinery.

It would be important to know all of those other things that are going on. That is what we mean by helping the WHOLE person. Mind, body and spirit, yes…but also overall total functioning as well. It isn’t piece by piece, symptom by symptom or diagnosis by diagnosis.

The very best recommendation I can give you is to find a real holistic practitioner and work with them in person, face to face, to find the root cause of all of your different concerns, emotional and physical. You two can work together to improve your total overall functioning and help you to thrive in every possible way…THAT is your solution – not questionable machines that are actually working on an allopathic model even though they want you to think they are “alternative” (and doing it without one shred of evidence they help in any way, alternative, allopathic or otherwise)

My suggestion would be to find a good doctor of traditional Chinese medicine who might be able to suggest a combination of diet, exercise, herbs, maybe accupuncture, maybe moxibustion…a comprehensive program that can help you on a wide-ranging and truly holistic level.

Good luck to you!

New Menage A Tarot Podcast: Tarot and Personal Boundaries

Menage A Tarot

Tarot and Personal Boundaries

In this episode of Menage A Tarot, we talk about where we draw the line in doing readings, what is in and out of bounds in our reading practice, issues with other readers and more. One topic that came up is local laws and the “for entertainment only” disclaimer we so often see on Tarot and psychic sites.

On one hand, laws against “fortune telling” are as narrow minded, fear-driven, superstitious nonsense as the fraudulent activity they aim to end. Crazy as it may seem, I actually support the legal prohibition against that kind “fortune telling” because it really is impossible to predict the future, whether it is for a fee or not. People who claim to make “100% accurate predictions” or claim to fix your love life really are, in my opinion, out to bilk money out of vulnerable people. They also ruin the public perception of intuitive work for those of us who want to help and read ethically.

I approach Tarot with much of the same ethical attitude that is taught in Reiki, mainstream medicine, and any other health care – because I believe it is a healing modality just as valid and effective as any other form of spiritual guidance, stress reduction or mind-body healing. I don’t have the science to prove it other than individual anecdotes – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. The Higgs Boson has existed – valid, real, true – since the beginning of the universe, but we haven’t had the hard scientific proof until a few years ago. Just because the hard science data hasn’t yet been compiled doesn’t mean the truth of thing doesn’t yet exist. The validity of Tarot and intuitive work…their role as a valid choice in a healthy mind-body-spirituality balance…isn’t erased just because no one has taken the time or spent the resources to compile a study.

That being said, this  seems like this is the perfect time to let you know just exactly how I approach Tarot readings. This is what I think an ethical Tarot practice should be like…but of course opinions vary.

Tarot readings:

  • Should be clear, kind and compassionate – never frightening or intimidating.
  • Can help you learn, grow spiritually, understand your situation, solve problems more creatively and make more productive decisions.
  • Can not predict the future, fix your situation, or read what other people feel, think or will do.
  • Respect each individual’s spirituality, and does not require certain beliefs for the reading to “work”
  • give helpful suggestions, but never prescribes specific actions – such as regularly scheduled readings or special services the reader offers for additional cost
  • Respects privacy, always
  • Are not the place for medical or pregnancy questions. Those questions are for health professionals.
  • Should have prices and business policies clearly stated in advance. Mine are HERE

Q&A: Why do different Tarot readers give different meanings for the same card?

Modern Oracle Archives

Some Questions are so helpful, they are worth a revisit – or three.

Q: Why do different Tarot readers give different interpretations for the same card?

A: There are several different factors that go into any one card interpretation. When you factor all those different variables into it, any one card can have a huge number of possible “meanings”. Which is a good thing….humans are complex and ever-changing beings. As large as a 78 card deck may seem, just 78 ideas is far too limited to be useful over one lifetime…much less be inspirational to uncountable numbers of people over the course of centuries as Tarot has been. A single standard meaning for any one card alone just isn’t helpful.

So on the surface, the answer to this question is context. The card “meaning” is just the beginning, no matter what meaning you choose. Add to that the question at…
